Registering with the GMC

To work as a Doctor in Northern Ireland you must be registered and licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC). As a public body, the GMC maintains the official register of medical practitioners within the UK. Its role is to protect, promote and maintain the health and safety of the public while it also sets the standards for medical schools in the UK.

There are different pathways to registration, based on your medical education and experience: Provisional Registration, Full Registration, Specialist Registration and GP Registration. Full GMC registration, with a licence to practice means you are permitted to work in any medical setting in Northern Ireland and the criteria are:
You have an accepted Primary Medical Qualification.
You have completed an acceptable pattern of internship.
You have completed any of the below:
Passed the PLAB
Have an acceptable post-graduation qualification
Are sponsored by an approved sponsor for registration
You have a valid English Language Proficiency test (IELTS/OET).
Your PMQ EPIC is verified.
