Our staff and patients have a voice in how we continuously improve the quality and experience of our care. We embrace innovation and are investing in our hospitals, staff, technology and facilities.

Listening into Action

We put front line staff at the centre of change. As part of our new approach to staff engagement, Listening into Action, we support staff to act on their ideas, knowledge and experience, and empower them to effect change in their own areas.

‘Onion’ is unique to our hospitals and is our way of supporting our doctors, nurses and other staff to continuously improve our care. At our onion meetings, we ask the question: 'what can we do today to make a difference to our patients tomorrow?’ Staff discuss any issues or concerns around patient safety, patient experience and staffing levels.

'Onion’ has helped us to develop a more open and honest culture which has resulted in hundreds of positive changes for our patients, acknowledged when ‘Onion’ was 'highly commended' in the patient safety category at the HSJ Awards in December 2014.

Investing in technology and facilities

We are investing £25.5 million into upgrading our ICT and IT systems to include new devices, such as tablets and smart phones, for staff.

Significant work to modernise and refurbish our hospitals is also underway. In 2014, we invested more than £32 million in upgrading our buildings and facilities.  

We were the first hospital in Europe to treat patients with new Puritan Bennett 980 ventilators, a new type of ventilator which helps patients to breathe more naturally and recover more quickly.

Watford Health Campus

We are a partner in a major scheme to redevelop the redundant land around Watford Hospital into a vibrant and attractive new community bringing new hospital buildings, new homes, new jobs, accessible open green space, and a mix of facilities and services.
