Living & Working in Hertfordshire

Our hospitals are central to three towns in Hertfordshire - Watford, St Albans and Hemel Hempstead. All three towns are semi-rural and are surrounded by beautiful countryside.

Our hospitals are on London's doorstep - Watford and St Albans are only 20 minutes by train into central London and Hemel Hempstead just 30 minutes. There is easy access to major motorways including the M1 and M25, and two major airports are nearby: London Heathrow and London Luton.

There is plenty to see and do. We have great tracks for cycling, walking, running as well as water sports. There are award-winning parks, woods and rivers nearby, as well as zoos, wildlife parks, open farms, stately homes and museums. There are great cafes and shopping facilities as well as markets.
Hertfordshire is well-known for its excellent schools – the majority of which are rated as 'good' or 'outstanding' by Ofsted. There is also a range of high-quality childcare services, including on-site childcare centres at St Albans and Watford hospitals.

Hemel Hempstead

Just a 30 minute train journey from London Euston and 10 minutes from Watford Junction, Hemel Hempstead sits on the edge of the attractive Chiltern Hills and is very close to beautiful countryside and areas such as the National Trust's Ashridge estate. A number of quaint villages are near to Hemel Hempstead, such as Aldbury, Bovingdon, Chipperfield and Redbourn.

Hemel Hempstead boasts a modern family friendly town centre with play areas for children and a great range of shops. It's just a short walk to Hemel Hempstead's attractive historic old town offering a number of pubs, independent shops and restaurants of varying cuisines. The Old Town hall is a buzzing arts centre with an interesting programme of theatre, comedy and music.

Hemel has great sporting facilities - the Snow Centre is one of the biggest in the country - and many sports clubs; the surrounding area makes it ideal for cycling and running.

The Grand Union canal runs though Hemel Hempstead as it winds its way between Birmingham and London and provides picturesque walks.

As well as great access to Watford and London via buses and the train, Hemel has easy access to the M1 and M25 motorways, and is near to Luton airport.

St Albans

St Albans is cathedral city dating back to Roman times - known then as Verulamium - and can boast lush green parks and countryside, a buzzing city centre, excellent attractions and a rich and interesting history.

There are many small independent shops amongst the high street stores and a great range of eating and drinking establishments. There are special events throughout the year.

The stunning cathedral, close to Verulamium Park, displays a mixture of architectural styles which show the many centuries of its life, first as a monastic Abbey and now as a Cathedral.

St Albans is just 20 minutes from London St Pancras, and is close to the M1 and M25 motorways, within easy reach of London Luton and Heathrow airports.

Watford is home to over 40 areas of parkland and is on the edge of some beautiful areas of countryside. There is a great mix of housing in Watford with everything including large country homes, Victorian terraced houses, 1930s semis and modern flats in the town centre.

Watford is well connected to both the centre of London and the open countryside which means a mixture of both lifestyles. It's less than 20 minutes from London Euston by train, and is close to the M1 and M25 motorways. Watford is also on the London Overground railway to Euston and the Metropolitan Underground line with a new station being built close to the hospital as part of the Croxley Rail Link. There's also an extensive bus network that serves the area.

The shopping centre is home to 140 stores and is a thriving shopping destination. This is set to expand with the proposals for a new extension and cinema complex right in the heart of the town centre.

Watford has a buzzing nightlife with numerous bars, pubs and clubs, and great restaurants. It's also home to the Palace Theatre, The Colosseum and the Pump House Theatre and Arts Centre, all offering a great programme of events throughout the year
