RESPONSIBILITIES:

The overall responsibility as a senor oncology nurse is to provide direct nursing care for specified patients, including appropriate supportive care and administration of chemotherapy, blood components, fluid and electrolyte replacements, and other oncology treatments as prescribed. As a senior nurse you will work in both a clinical and service development capacity.

CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reporting into the ward manager as a Senior Oncology Nurse you will be responsible for ensuring the delivery of the highest standard of care to patients on the ward. You will encapsulate the ethos of the hospital supporting patients through their journey. Part of your day to day will involve cannulation, phlebotomy, managing peripheral & central IV devices and the delivery of chemotherapy. As a Senior Oncology Nurse a vital part of your role will be ensuring you provide clinical leadership to all members of staff on the shift. You will have an extensive knowledge of oncology condition and the ability to recognise emergencies in adequate time. You will also play a key role in the planning and implementation of new policies and procedures in line with current practices in Oncology care. You will also support junior members of staff with triage. Working in oncology does require you to be experienced in end of life care and the ability to adequately provide this care to patients when required. Part of your role as a senior member of staff will also be to ensure that documentation is kept up to date and accurate.


YOUR EDUCATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Nursing Degree
NMC Registration
Qualification in Chemotherapy Administration

REQUIREMENTS:

To be eligible for the role, you will need to:

• Have extensive experience of working in clinical oncology
• Have completed a chemotherapy course from a recognised university and have a good knowledge of cytotoxic drugs along with a good knowledge of oncology conditions, emergencies and end of life care.
• Be required to be a good team leader to junior members of staff and the ability to take control of shift when required.
• Possess dynamic critical thinking skills, and is committed to quality issues, audit and research.
• Be a caring and compassionate nurse with strong attention to detail and the ability to work well under pressure.
• Have excellent communication skills and be a good team player
