Senior Occupational Therapist – Full time Permanent Position

They have an available opportunity for a Senior Occupational Therapist with excellent Critical Care Experience. You must have substantial and recent experience of working directly with children, young people with complex and changing health care needs and their families within acute and/or community services.

This role involves early assessment and provision of positioning advice and specialist equipment, including splint provision, for infants, children and young people with a range of conditions and diagnosis. You’ll manage a varied inpatient caseload with early intensive inpatient rehabilitation in the iatric Intensive Care, Paediatric High Dependency Care and Long-Term Ventilation Unit environments.

The Senior Occupational Therapist will:

You’ll assess for and make recommendations for environmental adjustments, carer routines and specialist equipment initially on the ward and later in the care pathway for children with long-term significant needs at home promoting participation in everyday occupations that are valued and important to patients and families. The ability to competently assess for and fabricate upper and lower splints is essential and you must be able to articulate your professional reasoning and the evidence-base underlying your input clearly. You'll be able to handle challenging and unpredictable situations calmly using excellent communication skills to support parents who may be distressed or stressed. You must be flexible, well organised and be able to respond positively to frequent caseload changes in a busy environment where patients are critically ill. You must be able to manage your own time effectively and be competent and confident in line managing and supporting less experienced therapists. As well as being a solid team player you will be encouraged to develop the service areas you lead on through MDT audit and research.

Key Qualifications & Competencies:

Be registered on the Occupational Therapists Register with the HCPC
Approximately 4 years post-qualification experience
Approximately 2 years work experience in a senior position either in a paediatric setting or in a relevant specialist clinical area in an acute adult setting with paediatric input e.g. hand surgery burns & plastic surgery
Highly specialist level of theoretical knowledge & recent clinical practice of upper and lower limb splinting techniques
Clinical reason, assess and provide static and dynamic splints, evaluating their effectiveness
Teach junior staff splinting techniques
Undertaken regular formal and informal postgraduate education & training in area of hand therapy
Staff management and leadership training experience
Evidence of self-directed/formal learning experience
Experience of developing and evaluating own practice & service
Experience of undertaking clinical governance activities
